History and Expertise

Here unfolds the family history.

It was in 1926 that Victorin Aubert planted the first vines in his estate in Tulette, located in the Drôme. Passionate and a devoted lover of the vine and wine, he passed on his values to his children and grandchildren. The Aubert family thus cultivated its expertise over the decades and gradually expanded the estate by acquiring new properties in the Drôme and Vaucluse.

The tradition continued in 2022 with Charles Aubert’s acquisition of Château de Serre-Blanc. Its vineyard is ideally located on the sunny slopes of the Cairanne commune, a renowned appellation in the Rhône Valley. For him, this wine estate is an opportunity to add a new ‘stone’ to the history of the family heritage and to participate in the construction of a timeless legacy.

Indeed, the family estate already shines across several appellations: Châteauneuf du Pape, Plan-de-Dieu, Sainte-Cécile, Visan, Tulette, and Grignan les Adhémar. By adding this cru to the history of the Aubert Family, Charles wishes to write a new page in viticulture, from an estate created about a decade ago.

Philosophy

At Château de Serre Blanc, it is indeed nature that dictates the rhythm of the viticultural activity. The will of its owner and those around him is to let the vines express themselves. The work of the soil and the harvests is not based on a logic of yield. Here, we speak of soil resting, hand labor, and respect for the terroir.

The creations of Château de Serre Blanc position themselves among the best wines of Cairanne. For several years now, the wines offered are composed 100% of grapes from organic farming. However, Charles Aubert wishes to go further in this approach and is gradually moving towards a transition to biodynamics, desired as early as 2023. Thus, he puts modernity and innovation at the service of this ancestral knowledge, inherited from his family, to produce high-quality Côtes-du-Rhône Village Plan-de-Dieu and AOC Cairanne wines. This working philosophy is part of a logic of transmission and aims for an ethical legacy, over several generations.

So do not be surprised to see bees or sheep alongside the harvesters who undertake the task with care and patience. To operate in rhythm with the earth and the vine is also to protect one’s heritage in order to pass it on in good health to future generations.

Charles AUBERT vinifies with great care and attention elegant white and red wines, marked by the typicity of a remarkable terroir, which are intended to be flagships of the Mediterranean Côtes-du-Rhône.

Terroir and Wine

Would you like to learn more about our vineyard and what creates the unique character of our wines? Come visit the Château; its rare, contiguous layout stands out for its high-altitude terroir on the hills of the Miocene, also known as the ‘Montagne du Ventabren.’

The vines thrive on one of the major terroirs of Cairanne. The soils consist of rare limestone scree and marls, creating an environment conducive to a generous expression of the vine and an elegant and complex aromatic palette.

The grape varieties of the property are primarily Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Carignan, and Cinsault for our red wines. For our whites, Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Roussanne, and Bourboulenc.

On the winemaking side, the owner of the estate has undertaken significant work to equip the vineyard with a gravity-fed winemaking cellar. This arrangement, combined with 100% manual grape harvesting and a vinification process that is more respectful of the grapes, allows the true essence of the wine to shine.
